This 1961 Chevrolet Corvette Big Brake Fuelie convertible was ordered and sold new from Don Yenko’s Yenko Chevrolet for racer Ed Lowther and was actually raced by both men after its delivery and preparation. Finished in Sateen Silver with Ermine White coves, a White soft top and Red interior, it retains its complete matching numbers drivetrain, comprising the 283/315 HP small block with Rochester fuel injection, 4-speed manual transmission and 4.11 Positraction rear end. It also incorporates the RPO 687 Heavy Duty Brakes and Suspension package, including the “elephant ear” front brake cooling scoops contained in the trunk-located burlap bag. Yenko also ordered the RPO 276 5.5×15-inch wheels with 6.70-15 black wall tires and small diameter passenger car hubcaps, auxiliary hard top, radio and heater.
This C1-vintage competition Corvette completed a no-expense-spared frame-off restoration in 2010, subsequently winning NCRS Top Flight Certification that same year. It is thoroughly documented with the original bill of sale signed by Yenko himself and listing all options and colors, the original warranty book stating the car’s “Off Road Use” and SCCA magazines signed by Yenko showing the car in action on the track. The combination of features alone makes this an exceptionally rare find, and its documented racing history further defines it as a very significant collector Corvette.
